7th grade vertebrate project; Assign vertebrate project and begin research
due Friday Dec 16.
VERTEBRATE RESEACH PROJECT
1. Obtain approval of your selected vertebrate from your teacher.
2. Refer to a variety of sources including books, magazines, videos, Internet, encyclopedias. You will need to use at least four sources and reference your sources of information as you do in Language Arts. Write on paper to be handed in with your report.
3 Research how your vertebrate’s various body parts are suited to their functions and research the vertebrate’s habitat.
4 Remember to research both internal and external structures. Your final report must include the scientific name of your vertebrate and at lest five structures and how they are suited for performing functions. Explain how each body part is adapted to suit its function such as eyes and their position o the head, body covering, appendages, Etc.
5 Include in the biotic and abiotic factors that affect your vertebrate. Examples of biotic factors:
• Predators, for lack of them
• Food preferences and supply
• Population density
• Other species with which your vertebrate interacts in its habitat
• Disease
Examples of abiotic (nonliving) factors in the following:
• Temperature range
• Precipitation
• Water
• Topography
• Wind
• Shelter
• Nesting site and a place to raise young
• Escape routes for predators.
6 Include information on the impact of your vertebrate and its habitat on humans and vise versa. Include drawing, photos, or computer-generated images of your vertebrate’s habitat, preferably with an image of your vertebrate included.
7 You will share the research project with the class. You may create a traditional poster 24x 36 in, a foldout poster,” Wanted” poster, travel brochures, Power-Point presentation. Any ONE of these may be selected. You are not turning in a written report. You should have 6-7 pages of information that you use on your poster or power-point.
8 You will need to have a draft approved of your report by December 10th. Report with final version and references are due on December 16.
13. Presentations will begin December 16th.This project counts as a test grade.

2. Choose a planet. 3-4 only on each one.
3. Research the planet. Conduct research using a variety of resources, including your textbook, school library, the Internet. Complete Student sheets 10.1b and 10.1c as you conduct your research. Find out as much as you can about your planet and find pictures of your planet. Note that you may not be able to find answers to all of the questions on Student sheet 10.1b. You may substitute other information about your planet.
4. You should include the following information in your brochure ( these items are also listed on 10.1b)
History: the planet’s name, who named it, and what the name means.
Discovery: When the planet was discovered and who discovered it
Planet” structure: the interior of the planet (What it looks like inside) and its surface features ( if it is a terrestrial planet)
Atmosphere: The composition and condition of the planet’s atmosphere (for example, does it have storms?) if there are known, if there is not atmosphere, say so
Motion: the planet’s orbit and rotation
Missions: a description of probes or missions to the planet, travel times and dates
Data: complete all of Student sheet 10.1c. Use the handouts from Student guide to help you. Include each planet’s diameter, average distance from the Sun, mass, surface gravity, average temperature, length of side-real day, length of year, and number of observed moons
.Other: Other interesting information (Include pictures and drawings)
5. Create your bibliography
6. Make your planetary brochure or trading card
Prepare your planetary travel brochure or trading card using the information that you outlined on SS10.1.b and 10.1c. .Include both pictures and text. Try to be original.
7. Present your brochure or trading card to the class. (one minute)
