Friday periods 1,3,5 due date
Monday : period 2
Homework Options for lesson 11

Option#1
Write paragraph at least ½ page explaining why it is important that the lungs have a large surface area. page 570 in textbook

Option#2
Research what happens during an asthma attack. What makes breathing so difficult? What do people do to relieve asthma attacks?

Option#3
Draw a person who lives on a planet where the atmosphere contains only 10 percent of the amount of oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. Write a paragraph that explains why you drew the person as she did.

\Option#4
Research and write ½ to 1 page report on how singers and other performers can be trained to control their diaphragm when they perform.

Option #5 Work the following problem:
Suppose a 13-year-old girl breathes about 17 times per minute at rest. She moves about 400 cubic centimeters (cm3) of air into and out of her respiratory system with each breath. After exercising, she breathes about 35 times per minute and moves about 1000 cm3 with each breath.
A. What is the total volume of air moved in 1 minute at rest?
B. What is the total volume of air moved in 1 minute after exercise?
C. Why does the amount of air moved with each breath increase after exercise?

LESSON 12 HOMEWORK OPTIONS

Option #1 Consumer science
When someone cuts or bites into an apple, you will find that the inside of the apple quickly begins to turn brown. The browning is a form of oxidation. Purchase several different varieties of apples and determine how the browning (oxidation) varies. Put this into a table.

Option #2 Health\
You will explore and write a paragraph (½ page) about what happens when a person hyperventilates.

Option#3 Science
You will use the Internet to research the “bends,” a condition sometimes suffered by deep-sea divers. Write a ½ to 1 page report explaining this phenomenon.

Option #4science
Polio is a viral disease that effects a person’s ability to breathe. We will read about this disease on our AMSTI student book. Explain how a virus can multiply and the difference between an active and a hidden virus. Use p. 212-213 in your science textbook.

project requirements for health project due 5/14/12

Your presentation should include information on each of the following areas under A. Disease or B. Health Career
This research project is due on May 14th, 2012.
1. A. Disease
• Cause of the disease. If caused by a pathogen, include an illustration of he pathogen.
• Scientists who discovered the cause of the disease. Who? When? Where? How?
• Symptoms of the disease.
• Effects of the disease. What short-and long-term effects can this disease have on the body? ( be sure to relate what you have learned about the affected body systems)
• Prevention. Can the disease be prevented? If so, how? What scientists have made contributions to preventing this disease?
• Treatment and cure. If no cure has been found, how close are scientists to developing one? What scientists have made contributions to the search for a cure?
• Technology implications. How have advances in technology affected the way in which this disease is diagnosed and treated?
• Self-treatment. Can a person with the disease control it by changing some of his or her daily habits?
B Health Career
• Job title. Include a photo or an illustration of a person who has this job title.
Job description. Describe t in detail the duties of a person in this career.
• Educational requirements.
• Salary. What is the salary range? What is the potential for advancement?
• Job outlook. Describe the need for this career in the future.
• Lifestyle implications. How does this career affect one’s personal life? (For example, how many hours a day does a person work? Does the person have to work nights? Does the job involve contact with people, or does the person usually work alone?)
• Technology. How has technology influenced this career over time? (for ex., what forms of technology have led to improvements on diagnosing problems or treating patients?)
2. Use a variety of references to create your poster that will be folded to create a standing cube or PowerPoint present ion
• Include references from following
• At least two Internet or DVD sources
• At least two print sources
• If you are researching a career, consider doing an interview with someone working in the career you have chosen. Take along a camera to take a photo of the person you are interviewing.
3. List your references in a bibliography. Prepare the bibliography on a separate sheet of paper and turn it in with your poster. Use the same as for your vertebrate project.
4. Organize your poster so that information from 1A, 1B is clearly visible. Make your poster as creative and interesting as possible.
5. Plan your oral presentation. It should include highlights from your poster. Be sure to practice your presentation beforehand.

type in AMSTI search
the books will come up, select Catastropic Events
Another web site that will be helpful for review for the test is

weekly homework for 7th grade 3/5-9/12

Homework options will be due on Monday 3/12 for 1,3,5, Tuesday for 2nd period
Weekly homework for 3/5-9/12

Short quiz on Thursday and Friday on starch and sugar test
All assignments must be 1/2 to 1 page reports
1. Explore and write a short report on commercial products that rely on diffusion for their effectiveness. (If you have trouble of thinking of ideas, walk through a supermarket or think about what you would see when taking such a walk.)

2. Research the role of diffusion in the mechanism action of transdermal patches, which are used for such purpose as preventing motion sickness or helping people stop smoking.
Art
3. Make a chart or drawing that illustrates how dramatically surface area can increase when an object is divided into small pieces.

4. Think of and list instances in which surface are affects how they do things in their everyday lives. For ex., why do their parents tell them to hang up their wet swimsuit rather than roll it into a ball?

5. Research and write a short report about what organs other than the small intestine have a large surface area in comparison with their size.
Math
6. Solve the following problem. Jason bought Lisa two pairs of earrings for her birthday. Each pair is in a cube-shaped box that measures 5 cm on each side. Jason checked his gift wrap supply and found he only had a small piece of wrapping paper left. He knows that Lila loves to unwrap the boxes separately. He is afraid it might take more paper to wrap each box individually than to wrap the two boxes together in one package. He asks for you advice. How could you help?

7. Challenge Problem: You finish painting the walls in your bedroom and find you have 1 quart of paint leftover. The label says that 1 gallon of paint will cover 20m squared. You measure an unpainted cinder block wall on your basement and find that its 5 m squared. Because you know there are 4 quarts in a gallon, you decide you have enough paint to cover the wall. Unfortunately, you run out of paint when only 90% of the cinder block wall has been painted. Explain, in terms of this lesson, why you did not have enough paint.
